Corporate or Union Team
What is a Corporate or Union Team Captain?
Corporate and Union Team Captains are a big part of what makes the Walk to Cure Diabetes successful! Team Captains serve as the liaison with your company and the JDRF office. Large companies may wish to designate more than one Team Captain and appoint one Company Lead to be the main point of contact with JDRF.
How can you become a Team Captain?
That’s easy. Sign up today for the 2012 DC Walk To Cure Diabetes and check the box to be a team captain when you create a team or join a team that walked in the past.
What is my role as a Team Captain?
1. Recruit Walkers for your team using your newly created Walk fundraising page.
2. Attend the Team Captain’s Kick-Off Event. At the Kick-Off Event, you will receive information and materials needed to start building your team co-workers, family and friends. If you can’t make it, please contact the chapter to send materials to you directly!
3. Schedule an Internal Kick-off (details below) with JDRF.
4. Company Leads may want to consider holding “All Team Captains Meetings” to discuss goals/actions/progress of the team and any internal incentives for Walkers. (details below.)
5. Recruit additional walkers through an internal memo from CEO/President to all employees encouraging them to join the team and promoting fundraising and incentive prizes (Samples available from the JDRF office.)
6. Raise Money! JDRF will supply you with tips and tools to help you raise the much-needed funds to find a cure for diabetes. You will also be provided with information on how to keep track of and turn in donations.
7. Walk! Come to the Walk with your entire team and celebrate your efforts that made the 2010 Walk to Cure Diabetes so successful. With your support, we are now one step closer to finding a cure!
Help the JDRF Staff to Conduct an Internal Kick-Off at Your Office
• An internal kick-off is a 20-30 minute presentation at your place of work
• JDRF staff and/or volunteer will discuss diabetes, show a JDRF Walk video and discuss the WALK TO CURE DIABETES and how to participate
• Team Captains can discuss internal goals and incentives
• Staff will be given the opportunity to sign up as a Walker or Virtual Walker
Get Creative With Your Fundraising
1. Encourage everyone to donate $5 towards a “jeans Friday”
2. Set up a betting pool for sporting events, such as the Final 4 or the Super Bowl and allocate a portion of the money towards your walk team
3. Do something memorable, such as when a certain goal is met, the boss will shave his mustache or the whole office gets lunch
4. Give the person who raises the most money something special, such as lunch with the CEO or they get to smash a pie on a person of their choice
5. Split the Company up and form friendly competition between departments
Get Creative With Incentive Prices To Encourage Fundraising
- Create Company Team T-shirts
- Use incentive prizes to recognize: top individual fundraiser, top fundraising Team Captains, top fundraising department/team, raffle prize for walkers raising over $100 (or over $500)
Ideas for incentive prizes include:
- Parking space for a week/month
- Group pizza party
- Sporting event/Concert tickets
- Half or full day off
- Special casual day
- Executive job swap/car wash/other fun activity
Approach Vendors to Participate
Send a letter to vendors to solicit them to either:
1. Walk on your company’s team;
2. Support your team through donations; or
3. Support your team by donating incentive prizes for your team’s top fundraisers Sample vendor letters are available from the JDRF office.
